HOW TO EVALUATE DYNASTY TRADES

Trading is the most powerful tool in dynasty fantasy football. Unlike redraft leagues where rosters reset every year, dynasty trades have lasting consequences that ripple across multiple seasons. A single well-timed deal can vault your team into championship contention, while a poorly evaluated trade can set your rebuild back years.

Start with value, but don't stop there

Dynasty trade calculators use consensus player values (often sourced from KeepTradeCut) to provide a baseline comparison. These values aggregate community rankings and give you an objective starting point. If you're giving up significantly more value than you're receiving, that's a red flag worth investigating. However, raw value is only part of the equation. A trade that looks balanced on a calculator might still be terrible for your specific team.

The roster-context framework

  • Am I competing this year? Contenders can absorb a slight value overpay if it pushes them to a championship.
  • Am I rebuilding? Rebuilders should acquire youth and picks, even at a 5-10% value loss on paper.
  • Does this trade fix a real weakness? A third elite WR doesn't help if your RB room is empty.
  • What does my roster look like after? Project the post-trade starting lineup.

Common dynasty trade mistakes

1. Overvaluing draft picks

Picks feel like lottery tickets, but most rookies outside the top 3-4 of each round don't become league-winners. Don't trade proven producers for pick uncertainty unless you're committed to a rebuild.

2. Ignoring age curves

RBs decline sharply after 27. WRs hold value into their early 30s. TEs can produce well into their 30s. Superflex QBs hold value the longest.

3. Trading reactively

Don't panic-sell after one bad game or chase last week's breakout. Trade proactively based on your long-term plan.

4. Neglecting league-mate context

Contenders pay premiums for veteran starters. Rebuilders pay premiums for young upside. Match your offers to the right partner.

Two-minute trade evaluation checklist

  1. Check the value gap. More than 15-20% should give you pause.
  2. Assess your window. Does the trade fit competing or rebuilding?
  3. Project your lineup before and after.
  4. Consider the age profile against your window.
  5. Check for real positional need.
